No Turkey

Kevin and I made our token trip of the decade to the bowling alley today, i.e., we go about 1x-2x per decade.  I don't know why we don't go more often.  It's fun, though gross if you don't have your own gear and end up (a) wearing shoes worn by who knows how many strangers before you and (b) sticking your fingers where who knows how many strangers' grimy little digits have gone before you.

Neither of us broke 100(!) in the first two games; we finally did so in the third and final game.  Certainly not good scores, but not bad for a coupla folks who bowl so infrequently.  Three games is my limit.  I go past three and my arm will feel like it's falling off the next day.  I bowled a double during the second game.  The excitement was palpable as I attempted to bowl a third strike, palpable, I tell ya, but alas, no turkey for me today.

I have more free time these days and it's been fun being able to spend more time with Kevin.  He had off today for Presidents' Day; we had a nice long weekend.  He's had some especially hard, full weeks at work lately, so I'm glad he was able to relax this weekend.

As is our wont, we started the weekend with dinner at Roma's in town.  Another Roma's customer said it's like 'Cheers' there and I certainly agree.  It's nice to end up there on a Friday night for a relaxing dinner.  Sometimes we even manage to get Enza a little tipsy.

I worked Saturday; not much going on there; the usual day.  After that we stopped by the jewelers to trade in a ring Kevin gave me for Valentine's Day.  He had something else in mind...a ring to match or semi-match earrings he gave me for Christmas.  Seeing as he went there on February 13th, they didn't have anything like that on hand.  So he bought a ring for V Day with the idea of going back to order something else more like the earrings.  I adore the earrings, so I am totally excited at the idea of getting a similar ring.  As those of you who know me can surely attest, I'm not a stylish person.  I'm not a fashion plate.  But I must admit that I enjoy a demure bauble now and again.  Kinda odd, since I'm kinduva slob otherwise.

Saturday was dinner at that pub we like and it was a perfect night - cold and windy - for their tasty soup.  That's the kinda night that makes me glad that we have a fireplace bc it was just the thing to do afterward, hang out by a toasty warm fire.

Sunday was a lazy day.  I had a hankering for sushi, so we went to my new regular sushi haunt only to learn that they're closed on Sunday (how could it be that I'd never been there on a Sunday?), so I went toward the other end of the spectrum and developed a hankering for a nice, juicy steak (yeah, yeah, I'm supposed to be going veggie, I know).  Off we went to Harrigan's, yet another choice joint in our culinary rotation.

After knocking around a few pins, dinner tonight was at yet another fave locale: Kevin's kitchen!  Kevin tried out a new shrimp and salmon recipe and it was quite nice.  He enjoys cooking, which is fortunate, bc it helps me avoid having Cheerios for breakfast and dinner.

We've been watching a bit of the Olympics throughout the weekend.  The ice dancing finals are on now.  I enjoy watching the figure skating, although I could do without the goofy costumes, the Broadway drama, etc.  I find the goofy costumes and soap opera acting to be a bit distracting and think they detract from the athleticism of the sport.  I do feel very badly for them when they fall.  Some (I think) Canadian chick really took a nasty tumble when she and her partner fell last night; she ended up going to the hospital; I wonder if she'll be able to compete tonight.  One of the Italian couples went down, too; apparently it was his fault and was she looking daggers at him.  Neither classy nor sportsmanlike.  It's interesting how the different pairs handle disappointments like a fall.  I would hate to have my partner glaring at me for all the world to see!

Vinny

Just heard that Vinny Testaverde is back with the Jets for the season as backup quarterback.  Seems like he's always there when you need him.  Ya know, he really seems like a good guy.  He's not all fatheaded about being first- or second- or whatever-string quarterback...he just seems to really like playing football.  It's a win-win situation for Vinny and the Jets...and the fans, too.  Who knows what kind of season the Jets will have.  But the fans like Vinny.  Vinny likes the fans.  The Jets like Vinny.  Vinny likes the Jets.  No one expects him to be scrambling around like a rookie; they just expect him to give it his best shot.  And sounds like Vinny is up for that.  It'll be fun to see how he does this year.

Recuperation

I've been about as active as Mei Xiang on Panda Cam, mentioned in my last post.  Mei Xiang has been rolling around in her habitat for the last few days, cuddling her panda cub, and not doing much else besides sleeping, getting her fluids and the occasional eats.  Except for the bit about the panda cub, I've been pretty much doing the same thing after coming down with a cold for a few days.  I sure would like to see the cub; I thought I got a glimpse of it the other day, but can't be sure.  Here's a picture of what the little bugger probably looks like right about now.

I have been on the PC a bit during my downtime this weekend.  I just finished a few NYT Monday crossword puzzles, thanks to a little help from Google (especially with all those Kentucky, Belmont and Preakness winners through the years).  If I need help with the Monday puzzles, I can't imagine how long it will take me to finish the Sunday puzzles, if and when I ever get there.

I've also been following my favorite blogs.  unfogged has this interesting post about youth sports and mixing disabled and able-bodied players.  Read the comments for some interesting takes on the topic.

I spent entirely too much time at this site about sideshow people, via Apostropher.

Bummed that, after falling for Steve Pavlina's blog, the newest article is re: bogus claims re: microwave cooking dangers.  Would it kill these people to at least fake a realistic looking scientific footnote or endorsement?

Well, I think I need to get some more rest, so I'm going to make like Mei Xiang and go snooze in my habitat.
